Medical Device Technology Ghent

MedTech Ecosystem & Healthcare Innovation focuses on accelerating the development and implementation of medical technologies to unload healthcare. Building on an extensive experience in biomedical engineering, hospital leadership, business development and MedTech strategy, the team integrates regulatory science, systems engineering, business development and innovation management to support safe and effective medical device development.

A key research line addresses medical device legislation and regulatory pathways (MDR/IVDR, ISO 13485, device classification, risk management). Through international initiatives such as NoBoCap, the research strengthens European regulatory capacity and improves the efficiency of market access for innovative technologies. Complementary activities include clinical unmet need identification and early‑stage MedTech innovation (Need2MedTech), exploring the MedTeG ecosystem by connecting entrepreneurs, health institutions, industry and investors. Additional work focuses on value‑based healthcare, innovation management in hospitals, and strategic implementation of new medical technologies.

Research activities

01

Neuromodulation. Computational modelling of ultrasound, optical and electromagnetic neuromodulation. For example, we investigate transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), magnetic stimulation (TMS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), temporal interference (TI), deep brain stimulation (DBS), optogenetics and transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation (TUS).

02

Neural engineering. Simulation‑based optimization of neuromodulation therapies for neurological disorders. Computational studies of closed‑loop neuromodulation.

03

Computational neuroscience. Elucidating the biophysics and mechanisms of action of state-of-the-art neuromodulation paradigms including ultrasonic, optogenetic and temporal interference techniques

04

Experimental validation of computational models through collaborations with pre-clinical and clinical research groups
